Saba Studios Works in Stereo

Most of us have enjoyed a good 3d flick. We put on the glasses, grab a bucket of buttery popcorn and nestle in our seat as we await to experience the additional element of the third dimension.

Now this kind 3d is not to be confused with 3d animation. The 3d which requires glasses to watch is referred to as stereoscopic 3d and is defined as relating to or denoting a process by which two photographs of the same object taken at slightly different angles are viewed together, creating an impression of depth and solidity.

Hollywood has been producing stereoscopic 3D films for years now. They’ve grown in popularity especially over the last decade and still going strong. Stereoscopic 3d heightens our senses and make us feel like we are participating in the scene, giving us a sense of involvement. It takes the movie experience to the next level and gives us more to talk about. So if Hollywood can find success in it, why can’t other industries do the same? The answer is, they most certainly can.

National Oilwell Varco (NOV) approached Saba Studios with a mission to produce a series of investor relation animations to showcase their latest offerings in … (yes, you guessed it) stereoscopic 3d. We were giddy at the thought and up for the challenge!

Michael Saba, president of Saba Studios commented, “Producing 3d animations in stereoscopic is a very different workflow from regular 3d animation. It really is a healthy mix of art and science, with the art being the direction and look and feel and the science being the merging of two images just right to optimize the stereoscopic experience. That’s not to mention that stereoscopic requires double the rendering power and double the post production work, because we have to create two of everything”.

The animations debuted at NOV’s investor conference and were extremely well received. It was pure joy to see a hundred-plus investors wearing 3d glasses as they watched with grins on their faces.
